Help Shape the Future of Flood Resilience in Southwest Nova Scotia!

Dillon Consulting, retained by Nova Scotia Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA), is excited to begin the next phase of the Municipal Flood Line Mapping (MFLM) project for Southwest Nova Scotia. This project is part of the MFLM program, a province-wide effort to establish a consistent approach to flood line mapping. The maps created through the MFLM program can be used by municipalities and First Nations to develop standards for flood hazard areas, guide land-use planning, and inform emergency services. These maps can also be used to help educate residents about flood risk in their community, and empower them to make informed decisions.

Last year, Dillon gathered insights about flooding from Southwest Nova Scotia communities, which we aim to build on through this next round of engagement. In addition to the data collected through field programs and modelling, the feedback collected through engagement will help inform the development of coastal and riverine flood line maps for Southwest Nova Scotia. Our process involves considering a wide range of factors, such as:

  • Rainfall;
  • Snowmelt;
  • Wildfires impacts;
  • Tides and waves;
  • Sea-level rise;
  • Storm surges; and
  • Current and future climate scenarios.

The result will be an interactive tool that will allow communities to visualize projected flooding scenarios up to the year 2100. Your local knowledge is critical to help improve the accuracy and reliability of the maps.
